About Our Parish

The Early Years

Originally part of the St. Dominic Parish, St. Francis was created to accommodate ongoing growth and new boundaries in the Bolingbrook community.

It was decided that the church would be named after St. Francis of Assisi, a close friend and contemporary of St. Dominic.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish of Bolingbrook was established by the Most Reverend Joseph P. Imesch on July 1, 1980. Reverend James Dougherty was assigned to be the founding Pastor. At that time there was approximately 312 registered families.  The site of the original church was located at Whitewater and Boughton Road.

In 1991, Father Lee Ryan was assigned to St. Francis, and then later Father Paul Hottinger was assigned to St. Francis in 1992. In 1998 Father Daivd Hankus became Pastor. In 2008, Father Herb Essig became the fifth Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

Building a New Church

The Church facility served the parish well for 26 years. However, due to the growth of the parish and community it became clear that a larger church with classrooms and meeting areas was needed.

Ground breaking was celebrated with the Most Reverend Roger Kaffer on September 19, 2004. Construction began February, 2005.  Construction finished in time for the Dedication Mass on March 11, 2006, in which over 1,000 people attended.

The Church design reflects our heritage as it is modeled after the church in Assisi, Italy. The church is sited on 8.5 areas of farmland adjacent to Boughton Road. The St. Francis of Assisi statue in the narthex is handcrafted from a single piece of Indiana limestone. This glorious statue is currently standing just outside the classroom wing/St. Francis Room.

Thirty years ago we took our first steps as a parish. Every year our stride and our spiritual lives are nourished. The Parish has spanned several generations now, and through it all our goal remains the same. We will strive for all our days to take our people to our God and build for the next generation.

We Pray Together,We Play Together

Throughout the years, St. Francis of Assisi's Faith Community has come together to plan and host a number of social events and activities. We've held many events with the joint sponsorship of the Knights of Columbus and Council of Catholic Women. In the past St. Francis held an annual Corn Roast, Pancake Breakfast, and Spaghetti Dinner. In addition, we hold special ethnic events such as Simbang Gabi and Santo Cruzan.

From the day the new Church was dedicated, we continue to sponsor traditional events along with new activities. We have the CCW's Clothing and Toy Resale, an Easter Egg Hunt for the children, as well as family get together such as St. Patrick's Day Dinner and St. Joseph's Table.

Two events that have a large parish participation are the St. Francis of Assisi Flea Market and the extremely popular St. Francis Fest.

Our parishioners celebrate the Feast of St. Francis by having a yearly pet blessing, in the spirit of this patron saint of animals and the environment. After the blessing of our parishioner's pets, the St. Francis Fest begins. This festival has many types of activities for adults and children. There is also various types of food, along with numerous games and music to enjoy.

These events would not be possible without the participation and financial charity of our parishioners. We are truly blessed to have our parishioners whose dedication, commitment and love for community go beyond Sunday faith.
